I already own the New Order and Practice What You Preach and I love them both. Now I don't know which album to get next. I have nailed down to three. The Legacy, Souls of Black and The Ritual. Don't bother mentioning anything they released after Alex Scholnick, I am not interested and the stuff I have heard from Low and beyond I think are awful. Right now I'm leaning towards The Legacy, I've heard it was pretty bad ass.

The Ritual is a sentimental favorite for me, being the first Testament album I ever heard, and I still like it a lot although not many other Testament fans do. However, of those 3 The Legacy would be my choice, but keep in mind it's closer to New Order than PWYP and even faster, whereas Souls of Black is more like those 2. For my money you just can't beat tracks like "Apocalyptic City", "First Strike is Deadly", "C.O.T.L.O.D." and "Over the Wall".

I don't know there, mate. I really like Demonic, and yes I know that this one is after Alex. Of course, I am a huge Gene Hoglan fan, so that has a lot to do with it. Otherwise, I would say Souls of Black.

Demonic? Seriously? That has to be my all time least favorite Testament cd! I voted for Souls Of Black. :shrug

I like Demonic at times too :P
I don't understand what some people have against Demonic. It's a badass album.

Damn. Am I the only one who thinks Demonic is the worst Testament cd ever? :shrug

I've heard some of Low and I couldn't stand it. It must too Death Metal for me. So if I think Low is bad then I probably won't like Demonic. So I'm with ya Mark.

Glad someone is. :cry Low does have more growl vocals on it then most, but for some reason I like it. On The Gathering it bugs me though. Demonic of course has more growl vocals then any of them though. It's just too one dimensional for me I guess. I want Chuck with some range and variety. :monkey

You're definitely not alone. Aside from a couple tracks I just couldn't get into Demonic. It sounded more like a side project that they slapped the Testament name onto.

Testament has a best of CD out that would cover all of the early stuff and help you to find your favorite.
Then pick up "The Gathering" it has Dave Lombardo (Slayer) on drums and Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, Sebastion Bach etc.) on bass.
This CD. took them to the next level and made me like them again, (this material sounds fuckin' brutal live) it's the only one that I still listen to by them...:metal

The Legacy and Live At Eindhoven is well worth a listen

The only portion of Low that remotely qualifies as death metal is "Dog Faced Gods'" verses.
As for The Gathering, I don't recall very much death metal finding its way into the mix.
Then on Demonic, "Testament's death metal album," there isn't really that much so I never have understood what there is to complain about in that regard.
The way I see it, Testament has always been one of metal's most consistent bands whether they're playing thrash, traditional metal or leaning towards death metal.
Oh yeah, and old waldorf is right about how using the greatest hits album may be the best way to go in terms of initially searching for Testament's best material.

I think The Legacy is an amazing album and I always loved 'Souls'. Low is the only non- Skolnick Testament album I ever got into. I actually liked Dog Faced Gods, Thats the most brootal I have ever heard them sound. Testament is one of my ALL time favorite bands and Skolnick is one of my gods.

I forget which one had "Trial by Fire" on it but I'd get that one if I were you.The song Bradzilla mentioned "Over The Wall" is good too.I've heard all their stuff but don't own any. BTW Demonic is a good album :evil

That would be The New Order, and it does kick ass.
