JANUARY.25.2008
Iced Earth opens auditions for bassist to complete 2008 touring lineup.
America’s premier Heavy Metal band, ICED EARTH, is seeking a deeply passionate and motivated bass guitarist to complete the band’s touring lineup for the 2008 tour season. If you have the chops to join Jon Schaffer and Brent Smedley in metal’s most bulletproof rhythm section, read on.

Applicants MUST possess the following:

A demonstrated ability to play with impeccable timing and accuracy.
A commanding stage presence that bleeds intensity, aggression, and emotion.
Confidence in themselves but also a willingness to be a team player.
Proficiency in finger-style playing with some picking experience.
Residency in the United States (Midwest residence is a bonus, but not required).
A familiarity with the ICED EARTH catalog.
A flexible work schedule, as this is not an offer for a full-time band position. However, should you land the gig and exceed our expectations in 2008, an opportunity for further collaboration on tour and in the studio will certainly be considered.
Applicants should submit the following:

A demo video on DVD is preferred, but an audio CD or cassette tape of your performance is also acceptable.
A photo of yourself if you do not submit a demo in video format.
A brief biography outlining your experience and gear setup.
Contact address, e-mail address, and phone number should we wish to interview you further.
Before we outline the format of your demo submission, know that, we ARE NOT INTERESTED in listening to a fully produced recording. DO NOT send us ONLY a finished CD release from any band that you have played with. We cannot judge your level of timing and accuracy if you send us a recording that’s been mixed and produced.

A simple LIVE home video or audio recording on a CD/cassette tape that documents your playing is all we need to know if you possess the finely-tuned skills we require. This, in addition to any recording of a live performance will be a plus in telling us what we need to know.

The following is what is required for further consideration:

A recording of you sitting down by yourself and playing LIVE along to a click-track.
Playing a minimum of 4 songs of varying tempos from ICED EARTH or a combination of songs from Iced Earth and legendary bands such as IRON MAIDEN, BLACK SABBATH or RUSH. Pick well-known songs with challenging bass lines.
Please send your bio and demo materials in video or audio format to:

Spirit of 76 Collectibles
1728 17th Street
Columbus, Indiana 47201

*Please note that demos will not be returned.

Too bad I really suck at playing bass...and can make more money scrubbing toilets.

Damn, I've heard a thing or two, but is Jon Schaffer really that damn stingy?

I can certainly understand why someone would want to play in Iced Earth, but I gotta say that this revolving door crap is pretty annoying. To me, this constant changing is worse than Megadeth. I know, I know, Iced Earth is Jon Schaffer....it is his band, period. But come on, give us just a little bit of an illusion that it is a band. Even Mustaine is willing to do that.

Other requirements to be in Iced Earth:

Be willing to be let go at a moments notice, even if you are doing an exceptional job.

Do not ever do anything that would take the spotlight off of Jon.

Play all parts exactly as written, even if you think that you might be able to make an improvement.

I like Iced Earth, but the way he lets people go really annoys me. Just call it the Jon Schaffer Project and get it over with.

Yeah... he's pretty much the Dave Mustaine of power metal.

Well, to be honest I make a pretty good living from scrubing toilets (more than most that do this kind of work at least). Plus with it being a stable income that makes it way better than being in Iced Earth would be. I doubt I could net $25,000.00 a year (with some of the best benifits I have ever heard of) being the bassist for IE. Sure you might make $500 or even $1000 (very rough guess) a night, but how many shows per week and is the tour going to be more than a few weeks per year?

Jon made it clear that because of Barlow's carrer tours will be very seldom and very short. So will they play more than a small handfull of dates over the year? Doesn't sound like it compares to any stable job.
