For decades I have been saying that my top 3 favorite bands are Overkill, Nevermore, and Motörhead. The order on that list may change, but those 3 bands have never failed me. So it is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of the one and only Würzel. That the cause of death is being reported as ventricular fibrillation triggered by cardiomyopathy. He was 61
He was with Motörhead through No Remorse (1984), Orgasmatron (1986, Rock 'n' Roll (1987, Nö Sleep at All (1988), The Birthday Party (1990), 1916 (1991), March ör Die (1992), Bastards (1993), Sacrifice (1995), BBC Live & In-Session (2005), and many tours that brought joy to fans around the world.
Würzel was an army corporal who served in both Germany and Ireland with the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Before joining the band that would make him famous had played in Bastard and Warfare. Both Würzel and Phil Campbell auditioned together for Motörhead. This made Motörhead a four-piece line-up that would make their debut recording a backing track for the British television hit The Young Ones on 14 February 1984. He had acquired the nickname Wurzel in the Army because his Scarecrow like hair made him look like a British children's fictional character Worzel Gummidge. Motörhead leader Lemmy Kilmister is rumored to have had the idea to add the umlaut to the 'U' to make it more Metal.
