So I was at work today worrying that I wouldn’t think of a rant for this week in time. Then a co-worker insisted that we turn on some lame ass Country station. I despise pretty much all Country & Rap. It just drives me up a wall. Then this co-worker (who I have always really enjoyed working with) hit one of my biggest pet peeves. Forcing me to listen to music that I don’t like. This happens all the time to us that enjoy the less mainstream styles. There has never been a broadcast station in this area that I could stand for more then a few minutes. To my ears, the heaviest station on the dial is as close to a compromise that I can stand without my worst side coming out in force. We are always forced to suck it up and put up with ‘their’ music, but ‘they’ never are willing to listen to our music for even a second.

Now as I said before, I really enjoy working with this person and I wanted to make nice. So I brought up several compromises. I let her know that I can tolerate pretty much any kind of music as long as it is 100% instrumental. Of course there is no instrumental radio station, so that was a bust. Then I brought up the idea of two hours of my pick for a radio station and then two hours of her pick. Now remember that even the heaviest station in our area drives me up a wall. Half the music they play is like nails on a chalkboard, but I was really trying to find a compromise. Of course the thought of that kind of fairness got a look from her that any director of the horror genre dreams of getting on camera. This is my point pretty much. We are always the ones that come up with the compromise. We are always the ones that are expected to just suck it up. The thought that ‘they’ would have to listen to our music for an equal amount of time that they force us to be tortured with their garbage is something that throws them into convulsions.

When I grew up I was always forced to listen to whatever my parents listened to. I was always told, “When you grow up and get a house of your own, you can play whatever you want”. So shortly after I got a house of my own, my mother was in a position where she was over at my house. The music of course was at full volume and heavy as I felt I wanted at the time. She acted like I was throwing sewer water at her and told me to turn it off. I reminded her of her rule growing up and that it was my house. So I politely turned it down and went on with my business. She went away insulted and our relationship went down from there. This lack of respect from her in all things eventually led to us not speaking, and continues to this day.

So am I a total asshole? Should I just suck it up and be silent? Well, I have no problem being wrong. If this is what is considered ‘right’ then I will be wrong with more pride then anyone has ever seen. In fact it will border on arrogance I am pretty sure. The thing is I know that I am right about this one and because it is probably my biggest pet peeve, I will always speak up and make the biggest stink I can when anyone tries to exhibit this level of disrespect to me. There is simply no reason for it and no one should have to put up with it at all. Our music is just as legitimate as anyone else’s and ‘they’ should have to put up with it just as much as they expect us to suck it up and tolerate their preferred musical selection.

PS-If each one of you recruits one band this week it would really kick ass! Just tell them to click here!
