This Swedish band is definitely not Vains of Jenna, this is one of the few bands within the power metal who knows how to present themselves with a sound of their own, being indebted mainly by the deep vocals of vocalist Joakim. ‘Attero Dominatus’ rattles on as they did on ‘Primo Victoria’. Songs like the title track Attero Dominatus’, and ‘Back In Control’ are similar to tracks like ‘Counterstrike’ and ‘Into The Fire’; they are being propped by heavy riffs, bombastic refrains, a steady fast pace and the always raw vocals by Viking front man Joakim Brodén.
After the release of Primo Victoria, an album which received a lot of very good reviews and overwhelming praise from metal heads in the whole world, Sabaton is back.
The first thing that caught my attention, apart from the rather sinister cover art, is how the bulk of this album is similar to that of Primo Victoria. Both CDs are named after the first track of the album, which has a Latin name [Attero Dominatus = Attack, Dominate] and are composed of nine songs, the eighth being a ballad and the last one being the only song not about war. The lyrics of the last song are made mostly out of the names of famous and influential bands.
And despite the fact that most of the songs are simply structured, they remain interesting time and time again. Unfortunately the CD has some minor letdowns as well. The more than eight minutes lasting ‘Rise Of Evil’ is quite bombastic, but the band is repeating itself to much to keep the interest for the full length. It should not have been that difficult to make an appealing four-minute song out of it. And a song as ‘Angels Calling’ knows a slower pace, and despite the theatrical keyboard middle part, it's fuckin' boring.
The lyrics of this song deserve your attention as all sorts of band Influences are shown into it such as: Accept, Annihilator, Crimson Glory, Destruction, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Metal Church, Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Pretty Maids. I can go on and on about the lyric content and the bands that all relate to the same style of writing!!
