Despised Icon, Aborted, Cryptopsy, Suffocation Studio 7 Sunday 10/16/05

Old school death metal and brutality blessed Seattle once again. A killer line up (minus one) of Aborted, Cryptopsy and Suffocation shows the old and young alike that death metal is still alive and kicking.

On to the events of the evening.

While driving up to Studio 7, myself and Zach “the elf” Palmer popped in the new Aborted CD for a quick listen. Cryptopsy was next in the player, gearing up for guaranteed evening of shear brutality. Upon reaching our final destination we quickly found our way inside and began to survey the surroundings. Up on stage was Aborted’s crew setting up their gear and double checking. We found the lead singer for Aborted “Svencho” whisking off to their RV for a chat; one notices that there are children on the side of their RV. This was pretty amusing, a brutal death metal band known for their aggressive style, traveling the country in an RV riddled with happy faces. After the interview *see Zach’s transcript of the interview* we went back into the club to hang out for a bit. We were able to sit thru the sound check and I for one was totally impressed by the drumming technique aided by triggers. What a wall of sound! Well all things great must come to an end, as was our stay inside the club. Ok so to the back of the line, man I hate standing in line. What seemed like hours, we were finally let in to the venue to find our spot. I quickly made my way over to the Suffocation booth to score a shirt and was shot down by the twit who had hours to prepare. Some lame ass excuse of not being ready and to come back in 5 minutes. For those of you who don’t know what Studio 7 is set up like, the bar is upstairs and has a pretty good vantage point from up there as you are looking down on the whole stage. I order me a PBR *yuck* but cheap, and worm my way up to the banner for get a good look. Aborted hit the stage if a blaze of fury, the crowd being a modest but not sold out, began to mosh, if a hail of big hair and up raised fists. After another beer I was again met by Zach and we decided collectively that more beer was required for Despised Icon was next up. More PBR and another, while Despised Icon screamed away on stage the mass quantity of beer did not cease the bad taste this band left in my mouth. As you have already seen, a picture was needed of DI so instead of taking a shot of them on stage we decided PBR was needed and a photo of the closed circuit screen would do them just.

Next up Cryptopsy, I had to get close to the stage as I have heard great things about this drummer and band in general but have not seen them live before. I was very impressed by the set up the drummer had. Man am I jealous, not only is it impressive to see up close but to witness a real professional drummer in all his glory. Mid way into their set the singer appropriately named Lord Worm, broke out a goblet filled with worms. Real worms and not some candy variety. After taking his fill of these slimy earth crawlers he started feeding the masses. To my amazement, there were a lot of fans willing to be hand fed worms by him. Personally I cannot see myself no matter what eating a worm; I didn’t have that many beers in me. After their set it was time to head back upstairs to enjoy yet another round of PBR while the mighty Suffocation sets up. Yet again I found myself packed in as close as I could to the front. I ended up behind some punk rocker kid with a full blown spiked out jacket. I knew this was going to be painful but what the hell. As Suffocation took the stage, I felt a wave of bodies starting to press against me and resulting in my impalement on previously said spiked jacket. Hell even our resident Zach was caught up in the pit. I am glad to announce that Zach popped his mosh pit cherry with Suffocation. I am so proud of you Zach, for keeping that cherry safe and secure for so long and to let it be soiled by the old school death metal band Suffocation. Mid way thru their set a fan made his way to the stage and growled something and then proceeded to launch his self off the stage, right at my head. Taking out a metal chick next to me, my attention was once again focused on the icons standing before me. As soon as the shock of seeing this chick taken out by this guy ceased, again this crazy fucker was up there. Knowing that he was aiming for my direction I braced myself for another bombardment. Sure enough he launched at me and this time I was ready to deflect. Deflect I did, but when I did and had room to turn around I noticed he was not moving, I got to looking and he had the mic cord wrapped around him. Back to the show, after a few people got the hell out I was able to squeeze my fat ass right up against the stage, in a really good location. I had a wonder view of the left side of the stage for the rest of the show. At one point Terrance the guitar player attempted to unleash his fury on a custom guitar. The song starts and his guitar cuts out right as it started to shred. Pissed off he attempted to fix it however it was dead. He switched back to his other axe and they proceeded to start the song over again.

If you have never seen Suffocation I highly recommend them to any death metal fan. Ah yes, now on to Denny’s for the 1 am breakfast.
