The Atomic Bitchwax November 11, 2005 Sunset Tavern Seattle, WA Being told that I was going to cover metalcore for Abrasive Rock was certainly fine with me, however it looked like my first show was going to be something quite different. Getting to the Sunset Tavern way too early gave me time to look around and get a great spot at the end of the bar.
Soon enough I noticed people syncing up cameras for the recording of the show to be done later that evening, and before I knew it Muskox was hitting the stage. They had a nice grungy sounding vocalist to match the nice grungy sounding set. Not that that’s a bad thing. I liked them ok, and their bass player was really talkative and quite humorous. Next up was MosGenerator. They were pretty straight forward hard hitting rock as well, but the singer/guitar player sure new how to solo and you could tell he was into metal when he busted out some 70’s metal trivia. Finally it was time for The Atomic Bitchwax. I had never heard of them before a few days ago, but they certainly made a fan out of me. They were kinda bluesy, kinda funky, and definitely rockin. I was bouncing around to the music so much, I had a hard time keeping my camera straight. They seem to have quite the following as most people there were singing along and headbanging or dancing. The bass player plays his bass like a guitar and there were a few moments of duel soloing between he and the guitar player. It looked as though they shared the vocal duties, which I always like, as it gives songs more depth. The drummer had a nice couple of moments where he got to solo or go off, which I always enjoy as well. I should also mention that he was really good even without the solos. Toward the end of the set, the bass player mentioned he hadn’t had time to get the merch set up, but that they would do so after they finished. I might have even stuck around to buy something if a huge brawl wouldn’t have broken out in the audience. About 2 minutes after the fighters got kicked out, one of them came back in and started questioning my husband Mark about whether he was “there with his friends or what?” After Mark kindly informed him that he had nothing to do with the brawl, the guy moved on down the bar and started questioning the next person. Next thing I know, the questioner disappears and I look over and see the next guy at the bar knocked out cold on the ground. When he got helped up he looked totally stunned, clueless, and also like he might have lost a tooth. I don’t think he had anything to do with the original fight. I DO think The Atomic Bitchwax should have put their set on hold when they first saw the fight in the audience so that the Sunset staff could have taken care of it quickly and kept the culprits out. All brawls aside, The Atomic Bitchwax was a great and fun band. I recommend checking them out if you like that sort of music. But bring a big guy with you so he can protect you from the flying bodies.
