Nile, Hypocrisy, Soilet Green, Raging Speedhorn, Decapitated, With Passion

El Corazon, January 23, 2006

I’ll just start off by saying that I really need to catch up on all these bands. I had no idea Hypocrisy had been around for 15 years. I’ve heard of Nile and Soilent Green. The rest of the bands on this lineup were new to me. I only heard of them when I signed on to cover the show. Fortunately I liked what I heard from most of the bands last night will make following them much easier.

I was set up to interview Peter from Hypocrisy at 7:30. I got down there about 7:20 and Peter was on the bus and ready to go. He seemed ready to just get the interview over with, but I suppose after 15 years of doing them, I’d get tired of answering the same old questions too. We had our quick and painless sit down and then I rushed inside to see what was going on.

When I got in the door, With Passion was already playing. The only thing I noticed about those guys was that they weren’t very loud. None of their songs really jumped out at me, so I proceeded to the merch table where I was supposed to get set up with my interview of Decapitated. I was informed that they would be next and to come back when they were finished playing. As their drummer Vitek was sound checking his kit, I could tell by the tone that they were going to kick ass. I really enjoyed their set. They were a lot more brutal than I expected. Covan’s voice was perfectly growly, Vogg’s guitar was perfectly shcreechy, Richard’s bass was perfectly pounding. I think they did a great job. And I think I got some good photos.

After their set I was told again to wait, so I sat through Raging Speedhorn and Soilent Green. Raging Speedhorn was a different style than the rest of the bands, and nobody seemed to be very interested, as there wasn’t much of a pit. The drummer was really cool though. He had this great presence. The entire band seemed to get themselves going, but the audience just wasn’t into it. Soilent Green came out and shook things back up. They were great, people seemed to love them. They had a couple songs where the intro was all mellow and slow, but it always picked right back up. They had great energy. The singer kept grabbing people’s hands and was really good about paying attention to the fans. During the last 30 seconds of the last song he jumped out and crowd-surfed until the end of the song. There’s something special about a show where one of the band members joins the crowd, even for a moment.

Of course, I got a call saying someone from Decapitated would do the interview as soon as Hypocrisy started playing. I figured it would be ok, since I could miss a song or two and come back in to get the photos. I went out to the bus and found Covan waiting to be interviewed. He was very courteous. The interview was great. And when we were done he gave me a promo copy of Organic Hallucinosis that will come out in February. He seemed like he was ready to chat some more off the record, but I had to get back inside and get a photo set of Hypocrisy. Plus I wanted to hear them of course!

Hypocrisy’s set was very energetic. The bass and guitar player kept switching sides, which made it much easier to get photos of them without the stupid poles in the way. Peter kept his hair in his face most of the time so it was harder to get a good photo of him. Well, actually they all kept their hair flying, so I just had to work with it. Of course they are there to rock our asses off, and that they did, so I’ll just say that hair flying around just had to be a part of the evening.

I think now I should have tried to stick it out for Nile, but after 5 bands getting increasingly louder I unfortunately started to get a headache. I’ll try to catch them if they come back around. Speaking of coming back around, Peter mentioned that Hypocrisy plans to come back for a headlining tour in September, so I’ll have to catch them again if they do. I recommend you do too.
