Well, this show was supposed to be headlined by Eyes of Fire, who I fell in love with a couple of weeks ago after reviewing their album “Prisons”. Unfortunately, their tour van wasn’t up to par and they weren’t able to make the show. I got to the venue right when Prolific was playing their last song. I would have liked to have seen more. The one song sounded pretty frickin' metal to me.
The venue was Studio 7. I love this venue so much. They have the all ages thing totally figured out. The bar is upstairs looking down onto the stage, and they also have a t.v. hooked up near the back of the bar that shows the stage. They have a concrete floor, exposed beams, and a real industrial feel. The stage is low and small enough for you to feel close to the band, but big enough to have it’s own drum riser. And the sound is amazing, when the tech is having a good night, anyway. After settling in the bar upstairs, Losa was up. I really liked this band. A lot. Unfortunately after their set, they didn’t have anyone at the merch area, so I wasn’t able to purchase an album. I think the singer was great. He had this kind of twitchy thing going on – he would bring his arm halfway up and then freak out and start flailing all around. His screams were really powerful. Unfortunately that was all I could hear. His actual singing vocals were really quiet. As for the rest of the band, the drummer was totally solid and I loved him. The bass player had great stage presence. He was jumping all around and using his whole area of the stage. He looked like he was playing to a huge audience, even though there were only like 50 people in the whole venue. The guitarists were really good too. I liked a lot of their riffs. They also had one song where they totally broke it down and did this slower kind of ambient thing that was a really nice addition to their metal ways. MTF ended up headlining this show. The sound was NOT good for their set. I was standing right in front of the stage and I could not hear the second guitarist at all. The only time I heard him is when he did an intro to one of the songs. I love this band live though, even when the sound isn’t spot on. The singer does this thing where he kind crouches down and gets to looking all evil, then he rocks back and forth. All of these guys just rock out to their own music. I really like that because it’s important that the band like their own music. The bass player is a big dude that screams background vocals into the mic. He’s a total maniac on stage. The second guitarist has a this look on his face like he’s about to punch someone, and he loves to headbang. It’s sweet! The drummer doesn’t do much, but he’s, you know, kinda stuck behind a kit, so, yeah. Anyway, it was an OK show for a Thursday night. It would have been nice to see a bigger turn out, but it was also cool to have the usual suspects just rocking out to the bands that were able to make it.
