Well, it looks like Eric got jacked in Portland for this show, and I got jacked in Seattle. At least between the two of us, all four bands got coverage I suppose. So I get to good ol’ El Corazon right at 7:30 when Hate Eternal is supposed to go on. The door checker has a problem with my camera and my interview recorder, which I promptly tell her about, and that I’m supposed to cover this band for this show. So the other door girl, the one with the list, who’s really cool, tries to find me on the list. I tell her it’s for Hate Eternal and she says they never gave her a list, and she doesn’t know the tour manager. I show her my email confirmation showing I have a plus one and photo pass. She tells me we can go in and check out “Hate Eternal” and to come back when the band is finished, but that she can’t give me photo permission. Great.

So we get in position just as the guys are about to start. Hate Eternal is Erik Rutan, Randy Piro, and for this tour drummer Kevin Talley. They come out and just start busting out the metal. Erik’s is a great metal vocalist. He has a good rough and tumbly sounding voice, and he busted out some solos that gave me goosebumps! I really like his stage presence, his guitar playing, and his vocals. He was way fun to watch.

Randy Piro is a total bad-ass on bass. He had a 5-string, and he was keeping the low end pumping the entire set. He does the circle head bang thing a lot. His hair was flying around in a perfect circle for probably half of the set. The other half he was doing brutal back up vocals that sound like the embodiment of Satan himself, or he was making the scariest and best metal faces I’ve ever seen. I wish I would have been able to get photos of these guys, because this band was one of the most brutal I’ve seen yet. Especially for an “opener."

Kevin Talley, who replaces Derrick Roddy for this tour, was a freaking madman! I’m just going to say “Derrick who?” – yeah, I just went there, but here’s my reasoning. I’m sure Derrick is a total maniac on drums. In fact, I’ve been reading about that a lot recently, actually. But let me just say that Kevin Talley is totally amazing. I couldn’t even keep track of what he was doing half the time. All I know is that there were some insane double bass beats, some crazy crashing cymbals, and some awesome breakdowns. This guy is really really good. Also Randy yelled to the crowd to give him props. You know why? Because he stepped up and committed to this tour 3 days before they were supposed to go out.

To sum up: These guys put on a great set, they were evil and full on metal. I think people should go to this band’s myspace or website and check them out, because they are wicked awesome. I loved it.

Here’s where I would normally rant about how much bullshit I had to go through to not even get to stay to see Arch Enemy and Nevermore, but I’m feeling nice today. All I’m going to say is somebody owes me one…
