Now this is how a night is supposed to go when you’re covering a band. I got down to Studio Seven and gave the tour manager a call. The girls were ready to go. He escorted me to the dressing room and they were there within a couple of minutes. Friendly, beautiful, funny, and nice girls, Kittie are. It was a great interview. You should go read it. Anyway, so later I came back and I was… get this… ON the guest list. AND they let my plus one come later without any problems. Imagine that! Once I was in the door I just caught the last two and a half songs of the band Laid to Rest. They didn’t have much energy. The vocals were harsh, the music was along the metalcore vein and really riffy. That’s about it. I didn’t get any pictures of this band because I was buying beer. I hope that’s OK with everybody. Then up came Burning Armada. I just had to look up their name for like the 5th time, so my criticism of this band is that their name is really hard to remember. Other than that, they were pretty good. They had really good energy. They were a little emo in their vocals, reminiscent of Thursday but metaled up a bit. Oh, I guess I have one more criticism. They all had pretty annoying hair. I’m just going to say that the music was way better than the hair. Up next was Calico System. The drummer for Calico System is sick. He was fun to watch because he totally rocked it. The bass player did some lame backing vocals. But the whole set was pretty much going from breakdown to breakdown. Now, most people don’t like that sort of thing. But, for me, I’m a huge fan of good breakdowns, so I will be checking into this band some more. The Warriors came out to bust it up before Kittie. The Warriors were pretty much straight up super metalcore. The whole riffy thing with the rap vocals, but it was done very well. Ok, this is the weird thing, and my husband will back me on this. I had been thinking the whole set that Rage Against the Machine must be one of their main influences. So about three songs before the end of the set, I lean over to my husband and say, “Man, the vocalist reminds me a lot of Zach de la Rocha.” He just kind of nodded. But guess what their last song of the night was? A cover of “Bulls on Parade.” Did I fucking call it or what? Yeah, that’s right. Finally it was time for Kittie to come out and hand us our asses. They did just that. Morgan was humorous, and interacted with the crowd just enough. She was even a little funny at times. One problem was it seemed that the whole set was missing it’s low end. I could barely hear the bass player, and it seemed like the vocals were lacking a bit of punch. Not for Morgan’s lack of trying, just that it wasn’t coming through in the system. Mercedes rocked the drums. She’s a total machine! She didn’t miss a beat, and even was able to do some backing vocals at the same time. The new girls Tara and Trish both had great stage presence, and everybody was flawless in their playing.
I got really excited when I got to a point where I figured I had taken enough pictures. It was just in time for them to bust out the “Spit/Brakish” medley. They did a great job of covering songs from old to new, and they look great while doing it. I highly recommend checking Kittie out next time they come around. Kittie are not just chicks in heavy eye makeup playing instruments for fun. They are bona fide metal chicks that will rip your fucking face off and hand it back to you along with a bloody heart and some spit. So take that bitches!
