Full line up: Deftones, Thrice, Story Of The Year, Atreyu, & As I Lay Dying Oh man, I had been excited about this show ever since I heard about it in December. April seemed so far away at that time. Well, April 2nd came and went and I have another awesome show to add to my archives.
After a screw up with the daylight savings time change, the interview I was supposed to have with Jordan from As I Lay Dying was rescheduled to a phoner. But I got my tickets and photo pass and got into the venue with no problems whatsoever. After walking around and exploring the Everett Events Center, we decided to hit the floor and see what was going on. This venue reminded me so much of the Mercer Arena, which was always my favorite place to see concerts. I liked how you could run down to the pit and kick some ass, but then you could go into the first few rows of seating and chill out and catch your breath. I don’t know who was playing when we got down to the floor, but they were just OK anyway. We saw that As I Lay Dying was coming up next, so we made our way to the seats near the side of the stage to find a spot for photos. The spot we found was awesome and I had a great time rocking out to one of my new favorite bands. They put on a good show. They all move around and rock out, and the singer is just insane. The set was short but very sweet. Next on the main stage was Story of the Year. I hadn’t heard anything by these guys yet. They had some cool punk influences going on. This band wins the prize for “band with the most energy of the night.” Two of the guys did this cool thing where they threw their guitars (I didn’t see to who, it might have been each other) and then they jumped up onto the drum riser and did synchronized back flips and then just got right back to playing. It was hilarious and fun to watch. The coolest thing about this tour is that the second stage is in a little corner of the main stage so while the second stage band was playing, they were setting up for the next main stage band, so there was only about two minutes of waiting, if that, in between every set. The first second stage band I paid attention to was “The Smash Up.” They were from New York City, and they were having lots of fun. They had a punk vibe too, but they did some cool metal type riffage to throw things off a bit. They weren’t amazing, however, and I spent more time watching the roadies set up for “Atreyu” than I spent watching “The Smash Up.” “Atreyu” came out and did a great job. The vocalist didn’t look like he could have all those brutal screams and growls inside. The drummer did all of the melodic singing. What was funny though, is that when the drummer would sing, he couldn’t concentrate very well on drumming so his snare would get totally watered down. Then all of a sudden he’d be back to kicking full-on ass. It was just an observation. Um, their bass player was crazy, and that’s all I have to say about him. The lead guitarist had some awesome guitars, like a bright green one for example. I don’t think I got a photo of that guitar, but it was just one of many cool guitars of the night. The first second stage band I paid attention to was “The Smash Up” but the first second stage band I LIKED was “Pelican.” They were this totally bass driven instrumental band. Very skilled at their instruments. Very melodic. Lots of chords. They were awesome. It was a nice break from the onslaught of all the “growl some vocals/insert melodic chorus here/growl some more vocals” that we had all been hearing all night, because they had no vocals. So after that mellow moment, Thrice came out to rock it. But they also had candles and incense going. I like how these guys mix it up. They have a hard rocking feel, but they also can play their instruments and be melodic. The funny thing about this set was that this little punk ass behind me kept getting pissed that I had to stand up to take photos. He kept tossing little balled up flyers at me, and even yelled “Sit the fuck down” at one point. After I ever so slightly bitched him out he backed off. He must have eventually figured out that in order to see at a show you have to look around other people sometimes. Dick. The final second stage band was Street Drum Corps. I highly recommend checking these guys out if you ever get the chance. They were decorated in face paint that reflected the black light. They had some industrial beats, some giant cowbells, some barrels, and all kinds of other stuff I couldn’t see very well. They did a good job of getting the energy back up in the crowd. I had fun shaking my booty to their rhythmic awesomeness. Finally after a bit of that it was time for the Deftones! I saw the Deftones a couple years ago at the Paramount and this Taste of Chaos performance paled in comparison. They still kicked ass, and played some of my favorite songs. They even rocked the medley, where they played the most kick ass parts from a bunch of different songs. But it was just not as energetic as I know they can be. The coolest thing Chino does is he gets right on top of the crowd and people just scramble to touch him. I’m a strong believer in singers interacting with the crowd, and that was fun to watch, but the overall performance was good, not great. And they didn’t do an encore. I was really hoping for an encore since every single band had a really short set. We then made our way to Jimmy Z’s up the street for some local after-party action, but by that time my neck was thrashed from head banging all night, so I watched my new favorite local band, Midst of Autumn, kick some ass, and then I went to the car to rest my head until my friends were ready to go. It was an awesome night, and I feel bad for any party poopers that didn’t have a good time. My neck was sore for three days afterwards and totally worth it!
