I showed up to this show about an hour early because I was really excited for two reasons. I just got a new digital camera that I was anxious to use and because I am a huge Scar Symmetry and Dark Tranquility fan. I am also a The Haunted fan, but not nearly as much as I am of the former two. I have dreaded going to El Corazon (the venue that this show was being held at) for years because of all of the smokers and the shitty ventilation. I am allergic to smoke and it really sucks to go to a show with no ventilation and have to breathe other people’s cigarettes, second hand, and then be sick for two days afterwards. Not anymore, however, because Washington state passed my most favorite law ever: no smoking in businesses. I was looking forward to seeing this show, which would be my first at El Corazon since the smoking ban took effect.

This tour marks the first time that Scar Symmetry has come to play in the United States. Being as they are one of my favorite bands, I didn’t want to miss their maiden voyage to Seattle. They took the stage at around 7:45PM and started tearing shit up quickly. Not many people were there to see them play, which was disappointing. The only problem that they had was that singer, Christian Allvestam, had a couple pitch problems on a couple of his clean singing parts. Other than that, they rocked and I appreciate their music even more now. Especially guitarist Per Nilsson’s lead guitar work, which was flawless and a style that I have always found to be unique.

Next up was Into Eternity. Oh man, I really don’t know what to say about these guys. Good musicians, definitely some talent there, but most certainly not my cup of tea. I had always thought that it might be cool to blend power metal with death metal, but after seeing this band, I have decided that it is wrong and it should NEVER happen. Once I got done taking their live pictures, I got as far away as I could from them to try to drown out what I was hearing. I was amazed by how many people were fans of this band, because they had twice as many people watching their set and moshing than Scar Symmetry did.

After Into Eternity was Dark Tranquility. This band stole the show. Watching singer Mikael Stanne do his job is something to behold. Usually, no metalhead would be happy to see a smile on a singers face through a band’s whole set when they are supposed to be a pissed off metal band, but Stanne’s smile never left his face and you could tell it was because he is absolutely in love with both his fans and his music. The band was absolutely killer and played a long set. I love this band more now than I already did to begin with. I plan on seeing them the next time they come to town, you should too, because they are worth it.

The last band of the night was The Haunted, who really should have been the third band instead of the closer, because, even though they had a lot of fans as well, they just didn’t bring as much energy as Dark Tranquility. Were they good? Yes! Did they have lots of fans moshing and rocking out? Yes! But they didn’t have that “something” that Dark Tranquility brought. They played a solid set and I enjoyed what they did, though.

All-in-all, it was a really good show and I enjoyed it thoroughly (except for Into Eternity because they just aren’t my thing). I took a ton of pictures and had a lot of fun with my friend that came with me. I didn’t get sick from cigarette smoke and traffic wasn’t bad on the way home. Pretty damn good night as far as I’m concerned.
