So tonight me and the mighty Slowfuse (this sites somewhat secret programmer) went up to go see a couple bands from the land down under. That’s right, two Australian bands in one night. Silverchair and some band I had never heard of until tonight called You Am I. I did a small bit of research when I got home and found out that the lead singer of You Am I is named Tim Rogers and that the band had been to America several times before. What I want to know is why I had not heard of the band before this. Tim Rogers is one damn energetic frontman. At the beginning of the show he starts fucking with this one guy. Half way through he tell the guy something about how he had loved him way before the guy in the crowd had ever loved him. He played their set like he was the headliner in a venue ten times the size. Why is this band not bigger? It’s a shame.

Next up was Silverchair. Now this being their first full tour of the U.S. and Canada since 1999, it was amazing to see that they sold the place out. After all this time they can still draw a very good sized crowd. This is after not having a true hit single in a very long time as well. On top of that, the majority of people still want them to be those pre-pubescent boys that played post-grunge so long ago. Well, for those who can’t keep up, the band released one cd with that style and have never looked back. In fact, this is one of the few times I was glad a band didn’t play their biggest hits. Despite some very drunk, stupid, and obnoxious assholes who kept screaming “Play Frogstomp” for the entire show. This was after they treated the real fans like absolute shit, pushing them aside and only giving the excuse “Hey, were all Silverchair fans, so it’s cool.” Well, no. It’s not cool you inbred shithead! If we were all fans, there would be a little bit more respect involved. Luckly I was able to make a dash for the other side of the security barricade to take photos of the band. Hopefully, the security got rid of those idiots so the reast of the people could enjoy the show.

The band played mostly material from the new cd, but that was cool for me because it is the one I am now the most familiar with. People really got into it too, so Silverchair proves once again that you don’t need a hit single to be successful in America. From the things that I have read recently about the band, I expected them to be a little snobbish. I was pleasantly shocked to see them be very casual and relaxed about even the most annoying things (play Frogstomp). Daniel even started telling jokes to break things up. I won’t tell them all in case some of you haven’t seen the show, but try and catch them on video if you can and stick it up on YouTube. I will spill the beans on one of the jokes. “Where does Michael Jackson pick his nose? He uses an online plastic surgery website.” Ok, so Daniel better not quit his day job, but I mention that only to point out how casual the show was. They even started their encore by letting a fan come up an propse to his girlfriend. Of course she said yes. Cheesy as hell, but the girls in the crowd loved it.

Overall this was a great night. I know what some of you are thinking. Mark is a metal guy. Yes, I normally listen to metal that either came from a band that peaked between 85-95, or at least sounds like they did. However, if all you eat are tacos every night, it is great to throw in a plate of Linguine every once in awhile. My favorite sonic dish is still 85-95 hard rock and metal, but great song writing is great song writing. So I toss in a few SilverChair type cd’s and shows everyonce in awhile. It makes the metal taste all the better when I go back to it.
